Occurrence of hyperostosis in leatherjacket, Oligoplites saurus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) from Brazilian coastal waters

ABSTRACT Hyperostotic bones occur in several families of marine teleosts, however there are few reports on its development fish from Brazilian waters. The present study identified the occurrence hyperostosis specimens Leatherjacket Oligoplites saurus, an important commercial species, using radiographic images. Biometric measurements four were performed and affected detected different levels regions skeleton: Supraoccipital, Pterygiophores, Cleithrum, Hemal Spines Neural Spines. Bones with represented up to 7% weight eviscerated fish. pattern found was consistent previous literature for other species genus Oligoplites, this being first report O. saurus.
